Plant Data Networks

With the advent of digital based plant systems, the need for providing a common reliable network based communication system within a facility has become necessary. A Plant Data Network (PDN) provides a common framework for the interconnection of important plant information and control systems. The PDN provides a premises—wide “Plant Communications Network” or “Backbone” of fiber optic, copper, specialty cabling and wireless networks for communicating essential plant data. This backbone is joined together through a set of network “Core” and “Zone” switches which provide both the connectivity to the PDN and control over the movement of data through the various network components. The PDN provides a plant wide distribution system for data similar to the existing electrical distribution system. This significantly decreases the effort to install and integrate the various digital based controls, monitoring, and information systems, including the essential control room Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems.

Hurst Technologies Corporation has extensive knowledge in planning, design, and implementation of Plant Data Networks (PDN). Hurst is highly experienced in the design and installation of industrial and commercial networks and PDNs. Hurst experience is based on developing PDNs for Nuclear Power Plants, Airports, Schools, Government Infrastructure (Police Departments), and other commercial applications.

There are three basic steps required in PDN design to ensure success:

Site Survey

  • Identify Immediate, Near Term, and Long Term Functional Requirements
  • Perform Extensive Site Evaluation to Determine Existing Infrastructure Available
  • Determine Existing and Future Applications
  • Determine Security Requirements

PDN Master Plan

  • Develop Configuration of Network Components
  • Develop Physical Pant Data Network Layout
  • Incorporate Security and Wireless Requirements
  • Develop PDN Specification
  • Develop PDN Budgetary Estimate

PDN Implementation

  • Develop Hardware and Software Specifications
  • Purchase Network Components
  • Develop Detailed Design
  • Test and Commission PDN
  • Provide Construction Support
  • Provide Service as Needed

Hurst has developed a team with extensive Plant Data Network experience that covers the full spectrum from conceptual design and strategic planning to complete turnkey projects.
